Sent out on loan for the 2019/20 season, Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has gone a long way to reviving his flagging career with Serie A club AS Roma.

Reports even claim the Armenian could make his move to Italy permanent in the next transfer window,  with some potential for Arsenal to ask for a player in part-exchange.

So who could the Gunners target as a makeweight in a potential deal? Here are four options...

As the son of Patrick Kluivert, Justin Kluivert has grown up with the weight of great expectations heaped on his young shoulders.

The Dutchman has become a key figure for Roma this season, scoring four times in 18 Serie A appearances and marking himself out as one of the most exciting young players in Italy right now.

The 21-year-old was believed to be a target for both Liverpool and Manchester United last summer, but instead stayed for a second season at Roma.

Having proven himself for one of Italy’s best teams, this could be the right time for Kluivert to take the next step in his development.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at the Emirates up in the air, Kluivert could give Arsenal balance on the left wing should the Gabonese international leave this summer. Even if Aubameyang stays, the addition of Kluivert would broaden Mikel Arteta’s options in the attacking third.

It’s doubtful Roma would be willing to swap their prize asset for Mkhitaryan, but Arsenal could use the Armenian as a makeweight in a cash-plus-player deal for Pellegrini.

The 23-year-old is exactly the sort of midfield creator the Gunners could use, with Pellegrini making eight assists in 18 Serie A appearances this season.

Fitting Pellegrini and Mesut Ozil into the same team might prove difficult, and so the German playmaker may have to leave the Emirates for the Italian to arrive, but if Arteta wants to build a dynamic, forward-thinking team full of young, hungry players then Mkhitaryan could help them lure a lynchpin.

Pellegrini would work well in a 4-2-3-1 formation. He likes to drift into wide areas to pick up the ball and then drive inside.

He is a player who thrives in between the lines of transition, something Arteta is keen to emphasise. There are few better midfield creators in the European game right now.

He might only have arrived at the Stadio Olimpico from Barcelona in January, but Perez would be a good fit for Arteta’s Arsenal side.

The 22-year-old made his first team breakthrough at the Camp Nou in the first half of the season, making 10 La Liga appearances for the Catalans before he was surprisingly sold.

Comparisons were drawn between Perez and the role Pedro played in his Barcelona days. He is a forward, but not a centre-forward in the mould of someone like Alexandre Lacazette.

Instead, Perez is closer to Aubameyang in terms of his profile, running the channels and in behind opposition defences.

He has yet to make a league start since making the move to Serie A, so it’s possible Roma would be open to the idea of letting him leave, especially if it helps them sign Mkhitaryan permanently. Arsenal must build a team for the future and Perez has great potential.

Nicolo Zaniolo

Zaniolo is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young players in Europe and Italian football’s next superstar in waiting.

Arsenal could use Mkhitaryan as a makeweight in an ambitious move for the 20-year-old, who has scored four times in 18 league appearances this season.

Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham are all believed to be interested in Zaniolo, so Arsenal will have a fight on their hands if they are to win the race for the youngster’s signature.

Roma’s interest in Mkhitaryan could be something that gives them an edge over their rivals, though.

Zaniolo is capable of playing through the middle or on the right side of the midfield. He is a naturally creative schemer who would give the Gunners another way of playing when the game is slowed down and opponents sit deep against them.

However, Arsenal would almost certainly have to stump up a significant fee as well as handing over Mkhitaryan to be in with a chance of landing him.
