'He's still banging in the goals... and look what he's won': Alan Shearer explains why he thinks Sergio Aguero is a BETTER Premier League striker than Arsenal icon Thierry Henry wasNewcastle icon Alan Shearer insists Sergio Aguero is better than Thierry Henry The former striker made the claim in debate with Ian Wright and Gary Linekar Shearer put both men behind only himself in the list of all-time great strikers Aguero overtook Henry's English goal tally this season, moving to 180 goals

Alan Shearer has ranked Sergio Aguero ahead of Thierry Henry in his list of the Premier League's all-time great goalscorers, with both behind only the Newcastle icon himself.

Shearer debated the English top-flights best striker's with fellow Match of the Day pundits and iconic hitmen Ian Wright and Gary Linekar.

The trio were split on the Henry vs Aguero debate, with Wright and Linekar both backing the Arsenal legend.

Alan Shearer believes Sergio Aguero is a greater Premier League striker than Thierry Henry

The England and Newcastle great made the claim in a debate with Ian Wright and Gary Linekar

Shearer placed both men behind only himself, as he remains the league's all-time top scorer

'Aguero is now coming up to his 32nd birthday and he's still banging in the goals left, right and centre,' the Newcastle great argued.

'I know he's playing in a magnificent team but 180-odd goals, 260 appearances and look what he's won also.

'I love both of them, Thierry was different. The role now as a forward has slightly changed.

'There's not so many centre-forwards now, it's a forward but the one constant is you have to score goals and both of them are not only great goalscorers but scorers of great goals.'

Henry lit up the Premier League in the early and mid 2000s, hoisting Arsenal to two titles

Aguero has bagged more titles and has now overtaken the Frenchman's goal haul

Aguero is now the league's highest scoring foreign player with 180 goals (in 261 games), overtaking Henry's 176 strikes (in 258 games) this season.

The Manchester City forward has also won four Premier League titles to Henry's two, though the Frenchman's haul includes the golden 'Invincibles' trophy.

The Argentine's 12 hat-tricks is a record, but he has never equalled Henry's incredible 30-goal 2003/04 season, with Aguero's 26 strikes in 2014-15 being his best.

Both men have provided many moments of genius, but for goals of drama, Henry has little answer to Aguero's famous title winning tap-in against QPR on the final day of the 2011/12 season.

Henry moved on to Barcelona in 2007 before he could edge closer to Shearer's record of 260 Premier League goals, a mark Aguero will also have trouble challenging.

The Argentine is enjoying another stellar season though, firing in 16 goals in 22 games to put him on track to pass the 20-goal mark for the seventh time in England.

While Aguero comes out on top in some statistics, Herny's 2003/04 season was unbeatable
