Schubert, 21, is one of Europe’s most highly-rated stoppers and The Independent claim he is on the brink of joining on a free from Dynamo Dresden.

It is said that he was initially recommended to the club by former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat who left the club last season.

Schubert will come in as understudy to current No 1 Bernd Leno and will Arsenal are reportedly looking to loan him out to a Championship side or somewhere in Germany next term.

He could become the first of a number signings made by manager Unai Emery as he looks to improve his struggling squad.

Emery is also said to be looking for a new centre-back and has been heavily linked with Saint-Etienne’s William Saliba.

Saliba, 18, is also said to be a target for Manchester United and Manchester City but Arsenal are reported to be in advanced talks with his club.

After failing to qualify for the Champions League next season, Emery is having to work within struck financial restrictions and is understood to have only £40million to spend.

Saliba is valued at more than £25m and would take up a sizeable chunk of that budget but Emery could raise more funds by selling players.

Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco is another long-term target as they are in desperate need of some quality in wide positions.

Carrasco is currently playing in China for Dalian Yifang but the former Atletico Madrid star wants to return to Europe.

The Gunners came close to signing him in the January transfer window but failed to get a deal completed before the deadline.

Carrasco has said: “The whole world knows that I want to return to Europe.

"Now, it depends on the president and I hope he finds a solution.”

Asked about Arsenal he added: "I can't speak about the club.

"Now I am not the one who chooses, but my president.

“He decides if he lets me go or not, but I hope I can come back."
