Arsenal defender Rob Holding will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament, the club have confirmed.

Holding was stretchered off in the first half of Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Manchester United on Wednesday, with a knee problem head coach Unai Emery described as a 'big injury'.

Holding has been a steady presence in Arsenal's defence this season, one of several players Emery is credited with improving in his first season in charge at the Emirates.

The loss of Holding could also impact on Emery's tactical plans, with the Spaniard preferring a back three in a run of testing fixtures against Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Arsenal added: "Everyone at the club will now be working as hard as we can to ensure Rob is back on the pitch as soon as possible."

The concerning news is a blow for Arsenal going into the busy Christmas period, and leaves Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis as their only two fit senior centre-backs.

The former Bolton Wanderers defender will undergo surgery in the coming days and will begin a rehabilitation programme expected to take between six and nine months.
