Former England defender Sol Campbell is back in management having been confirmed as the new boss of Southend United.

A club statement read: "Southend United is delighted to announce Sol Campbell as the club’s new manager on a deal until the end of the 2021/22 season.

"Sol Campbell’s first game for Southend United will take place against Ipswich Town on Saturday 26 October, taking over from Caretaker Manager Gary Waddock following the conclusion of Blues’ clash against Doncaster Rovers tonight."

Kevin Bond, who kept Southend in League One after the departure of Chris Powell last season, stepped down last month and Campbell has now become their latest permanent manager.

A club statement released on October 15 read: "Over the past week the club has been in detailed discussions with Henrik Larsson, Johan Mjallby and Tommy Johnson to be appointed manager, assistant manager and head of recruitment, respectively.

Campbell, who saved Macclesfield from relegation before leaving the cash-strapped club in the summer, has taken over from caretaker boss Gary Waddock at Roots Hall.

He is joined by former Manchester United striker Andy Cole, who will serve as attack coach, as well as ex-Portsmouth team-mate Hermann Hreidarsson as assistant boss.
