Sol Campbell left Macclesfield having not been paid for four months.

“We would like to thank Sol for his time at the club – not only in helping us retain our League Two status but also for installing a winning mentality.” Last season the players revealed they’d considered boycotting their final game in protest about unpaid wages after they were paid late for three consecutive months.

On Wednesday, six former Silkmen players defended their decision to lead a winding-up petition against the club, following criticism in a club statement.

He, his staff and his players had been battling a financial crisis at Moss Rose.

“Sol’s passion, drive and football knowledge will always be remembered at the Moss Rose with fondness.

He said on Thursday: “Macclesfield Town gave me a great beginning in the managerial side of the game and fantastic learning curve which I am truly grateful for."

Campbell had kept the Silkmen up thanks to a run of just two defeats in their final 10 games.
