Arsenal have made contact with former Valencia head coach Marcelino with the club’s head of football, Raul Sanllehi, intensifying his search for Unai Emery’s permanent successor.

Emery was sacked last Friday following a desperate run of just one win in nine matches, while his interim replacement, Freddie Ljungberg, was unable to arrest the slide, presiding over Sunday’s chaotic 2-2 draw against Norwich at Carrow Road.

Arsenal have now gone two months without a Premier League win ahead of Thursday’s match against Brighton and although Ljungberg is highly regarded by the club’s senior staff, the executive committee are minded to find an experienced and attainable target as soon as possible.

The likes of Brendan Rodgers and Mauricio Pochettino are among the leading contenders but are likely to be out of reach for differing reasons, leading Sanllehi to turn to another Spaniard in the form of Marcelino.

Valencia controversially sacked the 54-year-old in September, just four months after leading the team to an historic Copa del Rey final win over Barcelona, following the breakdown of his relationship with the club’s owner Peter Lim.

According to Goal, Arsenal have made contact with Marcelino already and the Spaniard is keen on the idea of joining the north London club mid-season.

Evertoon, too, are said to have registered an interest given the mounting speculation surrounding the future of Marco Silva who is on the verge of being sacked.

The Daily Mail, meanwhile, adds that Arsenal spoke to Marcelino in the summer of 2018, before settling on Emery as the man to replace Arsene Wenger.
