Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's Arsenal future is up in the air.

As June fast approaches, he is entering the final year of his contract at the Emirates Stadium and there's no clear indication over what the next step in his career will be.

Amid links to the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, there might come a time for Mikel Arteta to consider who might be in line to succeed the Gabonese international in wearing the iconic captain's armband - and there is one standout contender.

Hector Bellerin is the current vice-captain and would naturally make the step up if Aubameyang were to leave this summer or at the end of his deal in 2021.

And the right-back has already thrown his name into the mix.

"People may not see me as this massive guy who shouts on the pitch all the time or what people may have as a captain in their heads," he told the club's official website.

"But there are so many different ways of leading a team. ‘Since I was young at Barcelona, I would always be one of the three captains in the team. For me, it was a role I’m used to.

"Obviously it’s not the same when you’re 14 or 15 as it is now because the responsibility and what you represent is completely different, but it’s always been something that I’ve enjoyed. ‘I enjoy positions of responsibility and I enjoy being the first one on that wall.

"For me, I have been speaking to the coach for a few months and he was telling me that I could be one of the people that could represent the team. ‘I was really happy with it because I’m someone who’s been here for a long time and I know how the club runs."

Bellerin has captained Arsenal twice this season.

The first was away at Chelsea where he came up with a vital contribution to rescue a point for the 10-man Gunners, and the other time was in the FA Cup fourth-round win over Bournemouth.

Whilst Bellerin won't replace Aubameyang goals or speed in attack, there is hope that he can be the leader that helps ushers in a new era under Arteta.
