Wilshere left Arsenal at the end of last season upon the expiry of his contract to join West Ham.

He is currently out with an ankle injury so worked as a pundit for the Gunners’ trip to the London Stadium on Saturday.

After the match, Arsenal’s transfer business was discussed in the Sky Sports studio.

Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp pointed out how well Spurs are doing without spending in the transfer market.

This came after the news Unai Emery stated Arsenal will not be able to make any permanent signings this month.

But responding to Redknapp’s Tottenham statement, Wilshere pointed out they have not won any silverware in recent years.

“Jamie talks about Tottenham being so good without spending but Tottenham haven’t won anything either,” he said.

But focusing on former side Arsenal, Wilshere admitted fans will have to be patient with head coach Emery.

“It will be difficult for the fans to accept because we’ve been so successful,” he added.

“Before me [Arsenal were successful] but we won three FA Cups [in my time there].

“With Arsenal and the fans, it’s difficult.

“Everyone knows how Arsene [Wenger] left and how the fans, some fans, felt about him.

“They wanted change, they wanted it to happen straight away.

“It doesn’t work like that in football. There’s such small margins.

“If you buy the wrong player or get the wrong player in, that can really affect your season.

“I think a top-four finish and a cup run, hopefully win a cup, would be a good season for Arsenal.”
