Arsenal will reportedly complete the signing of German goalkeeper Markus Schubert on a free transfer in the next few days.

With Petr Cech retiring and David Ospina set to make his loan deal to Napoli permanent, Unai Emery was in need of a new back-up 'keeper for his number one choice Bernd Leno.

Arsenal were unsuccessful in a bid to take the 25-year-old on loan from Chinese club Dalian Yifang in January, but they are confident a deal can be struck this summer, with the player also thought to be keen on a move back to Europe.

However, Napoli have been set a deadline of the end of this week to finalise a £3.1m deal, and Emery has not closed the door on him returning to Arsenal if a fee cannot be agreed.

Ospina, meanwhile, looks set to be on his way out of the Emirates following a successful loan spell at Napoli.

The signing will no doubt be a boost to Gunners fans following the frustrating news that a £43m double transfer bid for Sampdoria pair Joachim Andersen and Dennis Praet had been rejected.

Schubert was scouted by Arsenal's former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat, who identified him as a promising young goalkeeper to give Leno competition.
