The Community Shield could see Liverpool and Arsenal field kids and fringe players in the traditional Wembley curtain raiser.

Football Association bosses have confirmed the game will go ahead on Saturday, August 29, between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners.

But even though both clubs will take part, it is likely they could send out under strength teams because Arsenal will not return to pre-season training until the week beginning August 17 while Liverpool face losing big name players to international duty the following week.

The Reds return to their Melwood training ground to commence preparations for the 2020/21 season on August 15.

Liverpool and Arsenal have both won the Community Shield 15 times - most recently in 2006 and 2017 respectively - the joint second most in history after Manchester United, who have lifted it on 21 occasions.

The FA were hoping the Community Shield could be used as a test event for a limited number of fans to be allowed back in but that will now not happen as the Government has pulled back on those experiments following growing concerns about a rise in coronavirus.

However, the FA will press ahead with the game as planned with several commercial and TV deals in place.

It will be followed by an international break from September 2 to 10 with England facing Iceland and Denmark in the Nations League.

Then the Premier League 2020/21 season will start on September 12 and will run until May 23, 2021. The Premier League are expected to announce next season’s fixtures and dates by August 21.

The EFL has confirmed the Championship, League One and League Two campaigns will start on the same weekend as the Premier League and their regular seasons will end on May 8, 2021.
