Arsene Wenger has admitted that Arsenal wanted to sign Gerard Pique when they completed a deal for Cesc Fabregas in 2003.

The former Arsenal  manager was asked about the Gunners' well documented pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo, before the topic moved onto whether he could have signed Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

He did confirm, however, that Arsenal were keen to lure former Manchester United defender Pique when they poached Fabregas from the La Masia academy.

And speaking on beIN Sports, Wenger admitted he wanted to complete a deal for the player.

"We were not near to signing Messi, but we tried to sign Pique and Fabregas.

"Don't forget that 2006 when we played the Champions League final against Barcelona, Messi couldn't play because he was injured.
