Mikel Arteta had a smart response to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang dropping the FA Cup as Arsenal celebrated their triumph over Chelsea in the final.

The Gunners captain scored twice to lead his side to victory after Christian Pulisic opened the scoring for the Blues.

But Aubameyang's skill on the pitch was not matched by his endeavours lifting the trophy, as he dropped the FA Cup during the presentation.

The triumph over Chelsea marks the first time the Gabon striker has won silverware since his move to Arsenal in 2018.

He has been on the receiving end of near misses, with Arsenal beaten in the EFL Cup final in 2018 and the Europa League showpiece last year.

And Arteta was on hand to make light of Aubameyang dropping the same trophy he lifted as Gunners captain in 2014, claiming he will grow used to lifting titles under his management.

"He needs more experience with trophies, we can get him used to that," the Spaniard quipped after the match.

Aubameyang's last trophy victory came with former club Borussia Dortmund as they beat Eintracht Frankfurt to win the German Cup in 2017.

Before that, the 31-year-old won the French League Cup with Saint-Etienne in 2013.

Aubameyang's future continues to hang in the balance as he enters the final year of his deal at the Emirates Stadium.

But Arteta provided a positive update on whether he expects Aubameyang will sign a new deal with the Gunners after the match.

"He knows what I think about him. I want to build the squad around him," Arteta said.

"I think he wants to stay and it is just about getting the deal done. But I think these moments will help him to realise and believe that we are in the right path and he is a big part of that.

"He is loved by everybody at the club. Hopefully he can continue with us. Will he extend? I think he will, yes."
