Declan Rice scored his first career goal to fire West Ham to a 1-0 win over Arsenal.

The 19-year-old midfielder struck early in the second half to condemn Arsenal, who left Mesut Ozil out of their squad, to a fifth defeat of the season.

Marko Arnautovic was in the West Ham side despite having his head turned by the Chinese, but in the end it was Rice who delivered.

Ozil had missed the last few Arsenal games through injury, but had trained all week ahead of the trip east and was available for selection to Emery, who opted to name three full-backs on his bench ahead of the playmaker.

Emery’s fractious relationship with star man Mesut Ozil seemingly began ahead of the reverse fixture at the Emirates earlier this season.

Once again, though, it was his ability, at such a young age, to marshal and dictate the West Ham midfield, and with that the game.

West Ham have this week rejected an offer of £35million for talismanic striker Arnautovic, and despite early resistance could well be open to a sale at the right price.
