Former Bordeaux scout Laurent Calippe has criticised the club’s decision to sign Laurent Koscielny from Arsenal this summer saying they have overpaid for him given his age.

Koscielny left Arsenal in acrimonious circumstances after refusing to travel on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States and eventually joined Bordeaux in a £4.6m deal last week.

Arsenal had been keen to keep Koscielny prior to his outburst in July and his arrival has been widely seen as a coup for Bordeaux considering they finished 14th in Ligue 1 last season.

That isn’t a view shared by the recently departed Calippe, however, who claims that Bordeaux have committed too much money towards a player who will turn 34 next month.

Speaking to Get French Football News, he said: ‘It’s not at all the choice that I would have made. Buy a 34-year-old, spend €5m on him, pay him around €3.3m a year. For me, no, he’s not the player I’d have recruited.

‘He’s the type of player I’d have thought might have gone to China, gone somewhere for more money – ok, he’s decided to stay in France, but I wouldn’t have invested that much money, if I’d been at Bordeaux, on a 34-year-old.

‘Yes, he’s got lots of caps, a good reputation, he’s a very good player. But they’ve signed him for four years! Four years at three million, three and a half million a year! They’re giving him 15 million over four years!’

When asked whether he would have bought someone younger, he responded: ‘Yes, like [Anthony] Briançon from Nimes.

‘He’d have cost €3m, but he’s 23, 24, and we could have helped him to the next level at Bordeaux and then, in two years, maybe sold him on to a major championship such as the English league for €8-12m.

‘But we’ll never sell Koscielny! They said they wanted the Bordeaux model to be about trading – but you trade with youngsters, not 34-year-olds!’

Koscielny established himself as a French international and one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders during nine years at Arsenal in which he made 353 appearances in all competitions.

Despite his longevity at the club, though, Koscielny’s reputation at Arsenal has suffered due to the manner in which he engineered his exit from the club.

Koscielny provoked further backlash after removing an Arsenal to shirt to reveal a Bordeaux one underneath in the club’s official announcement video on social media.
