Freddie Ljungberg has laughed off the criticism he received from Paul Scholes for failing to wear a suit during his opening Arsenal match at Norwich.

The 42-year-old was appointed caretaker manager of the Gunners following Unai Emery’s dismissal last week and oversaw their 2-2 draw away at Carrow Road.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang once again got Arsenal out of trouble with a pair of equalisers and Ljungberg was upbeat about his side’s performance after the final whistle.

Manchester United legend Scholes, though, believes Ljungberg will be overlooked for the permanent position and slammed the Swede’s casual attire on Sunday.

Ljungberg walked out for pitch inspection wearing a blue shirt underneath a knitted grey jumper rather than Arsenal’s traditional navy suit.

‘You would think he’d be out in a suit to show a bit of proudness that he took the job,’ Scholes told Premier League Productions.

‘To me that’s a great start… shirt and tie to show some discipline.

‘I don’t think he’ll be the right man.’

At his press conference ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Brighton, Ljungberg was asked about his outfit choice and saw the funny side of Scholes’ comments.

‘That’s extremely important,’ Ljungberg responded sarcastically.

‘It happened so quickly that the suit was at the dry cleaners and I couldn’t get it ready,’

‘I’ve seen in the Premier League coaches with a tracksuit, I’ve seen coaches with a suit and I’ve seen coaches with a sweater so I’ll decide on matchday which one I will use.

‘I haven’t been fitted for a club suit but I can’t really see that that’s a discussion. I will make sure you will know what I wear.’

Ljungberg has been impressed by Brighton this season and knows Arsenal cannot afford to underestimate Graham Potter’s side on Wednesday night.

‘They look good,’ Ljungberg added.

‘They change formations a lot and are very well organised but we need to concentrate on our game.

‘I need to develop how we play football and I’ll concentrate on that.’

On recent criticism aimed at Arsenal’s defence, Ljungberg said: ‘My players try to defend and you have different types of players in the squad.

‘If players are not super quick it can be difficult but we put out a structure.

‘At Norwich sometimes it became a sprint and we want to stop that.’
