Gary Neville suggested referee Craig Pawson was aware of the ill-feeling between Troy Deeney and Arsenal before he sent off the striker on Monday night.

The tables turned on Watford captain Deeney on Monday night when the man synonymous with taunting Arsenal was shown an 11th minute red card in his side's 1-0 defeat by the Gunners.

The Hornets striker, who infamously claimed Arsenal 'lacked cojones' last season after Watford beat Arsenal 2-1, appeared to elbow Gunners midfielder Lucas Torreira as he made a cross-field pass.

The 30-year-old was instantly shown a red card by referee Pawson, much to the amusement of the travelling Arsenal fans.

It is not the first time Deeney has been left embarrassed after his remarks about Arsenal.

Hornets boss Javi Gracia felt Deeney should have been shown a yellow card.

Deeney was dismissed just one minute after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had given the Arsenal the lead thanks to a dreadful error from goalkeeper Ben Foster.
