Granit Xhaka: Arsenal will prioritise top four finish over Europa League glory

Granit Xhaka is willing to sacrifice Europa League glory if it means Arsenal finish in the top four of the Premier League.

“For me, the Premier League is first and after if you can go to the final and take the Europa League, of course, it is nice as well, but for us it is the Premier League first.

That would mean a return to the Champions League next season for Unai Emery’s side, but they can also achieve that by winning the Europa League.

Arsenal travel to Napoli with a 2-0 lead for the second leg of their quarter-final on Thursday, but Xhaka insists finishing in the top four of the Premier League is the priority.

Arsenal now sit ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea on goal difference but, with a game in hand on the Blues, are in the driving seat to secure a top-four finish with five matches to go.

“I think we want to stay in the top four — we want to be back in the Champions League,” said the Swiss.

This can be a big weekend for us.” Last night was a first clean sheet away from home in the Premier League this season for Emery’s side and Xhaka believes the win at Vicarage Road has taught them the mentality required on their travels.
