Granit Xhaka reflected upon a season of ‘ups and downs’ after Arsenal recorded a record 14th FA Cup win following their 2-1 win against Chelsea at Wembley.

The Gunners battled back from a goal down in north London to get their hands on the trophy for the fourth time in six years.

It’s Xhaka’s second in his time with the club but the win took on even greater significance for the Swiss midfielder after his turbulent campaign at the club.

The Switzerland international looked set to leave the club in January after he was stripped of the club captaincy under Unai Emery earlier in the campaign.

Xhaka told supporters to ‘f**k off’ as he exited the field during a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in November and the midfielder was keen to leave the club in the January transfer market following talks with Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin.

However, Mikel Arteta restored Xhaka to the starting line-up following his appointment and the Swiss has been a first team regular ever since.

Xhaka capped off a difficult season by playing the full 90 minutes as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice at Wembley to gift Arteta his first silverware as a manager.

And the midfielder reflected on a mixed campaign for himself by speaking of the ‘ups and downs’ following Arsenal’s win, which he dedicated to supporters.

‘What a season! With ups and downs! With faith in yourself and this team, you can do anything!!,’ said Xhaka.

‘This trophy is very important for all of us, the whole club. But it is also for all who have supported us! Thank you’

Aubameyang will pen new Arsenal deal if Arteta signs Barcelona star

Arsenal’s win means they will enter the Europa League group stages, in a boost for the club’s finances.

It also means rivals Tottenham will have to play three games before they can secure their place in the group stages.

Arteta’s priority this summer is to convince Aubameyang to extend his deal at the club as his current contract expires in less than a year’s time.
