Arsenal legend Ian Wright couldn’t resist a dig at Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finally signed a new deal with the Gunners.

The 31-year-old announced that he had committed his future to the club in a live reveal on the Gunners’ website this afternoon.

Aubameyang had less than a year to run on his deal and his extension comes as a huge sigh of relief for supporters, who have seen the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere and Samir Nasri leave in recent years after running down their deals.

But the most painful departures were Van Persie in 2013 and Sanchez in 2018, with the pair both deciding to join rivals Manchester United.

Aubameyang celebrated his extension by facetiming Wright from the Emirates and the former Arsenal striker couldn’t resist a sly dig at the former United pair after the Gabon international decided to commit his future.

Speaking to Aubameyang, Wright said: ‘Oh my god, I love you man.

‘Listen, can I just say, because there’s so many people [watching the video] I’m sure there’s a lot of people requesting you.

For us [Arsenal supporters], in a time when we need you most, when we’ve seen legends leave us when we need them, you are legendary status, for life. Love you, captain.’

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signs new Arsenal contract

Aubameyang’s extension is a huge coup for Mikel Arteta, who had prioritised keeping the 31-year-old on his appointment last December.

The former Dortmund ace was considering his options after a dismal start to the season under Unai Emery and Arsenal had shown a reluctance to hand him wages of around £250,000-a-week.

However, Arteta has transformed the mood around the club and Aubameyang has thrived under his guidance since he joined from Manchester City.

Aubameyang will be hoping to celebrate his new deal when Arsenal host West Ham this weekend.

The Gabonese got his first of the season in a convincing 3-0 win against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
