Kieran Trippier claims Chelsea was bigger game for Tottenham players than Arsenal during his time in London

The England right-back spent four years at Spurs before leaving for Atletico Madrid last summer.

Trippier was Tottenham’s first-choice right-back after Kyle Walker joined Man City in 2017

In 11 meetings as a Tottenham player against Chelsea, Trippier was on the winning side just four times and endured heartbreaking EFL and FA Cup semi-final defeats to the Blues.

And despite the well known north London rivalry between Spurs and Arsenal, Trippier revealed a few of his former teammates had a greater disdain for Chelsea.

When discussing the rivalry between Atletico and Real Madrid, he told the Beautiful Game podcast: “It’s so big out here the Madrid derby.

“Even when I was playing for Tottenham I felt, no disrespect to Arsenal, but I didn’t feel like it was our main derby. I felt it was Chelsea. I just felt like the emotion probably.

“Don’t get me wrong Tottenham vs Arsenal is huge to the fans because it is what it is with them.

“As a player, for me and certainly for a few other players, the Chelsea game was a bigger game for them.”

Trippier has been a hit in Spain, starting 20 LaLiga games for Atletico in his debut season

Trippier could have a point when talking about Tottenham’s rivalry with Chelsea.

The Blues cost Tottenham the Premier League title when they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 in May 2016.

Not only is that match remembered for handing a first ever Premier League crown to Leicester, but for the amount of yellow cards shown at Stamford Bridge.

The ill-tempered clash saw Tottenham commit 20 fouls and pick up a whopping nine yellow cards to Chelsea’s three cautions.

Video footage also showed Mousa Dembele poke Diego Costa in the eye, which resulted in a six-game ban for the midfielder.

Tempers were at an all time high at Stamford Bridge in May 2016

The intensity of Spurs vs Chelsea is nothing compared to the Madrid derby, though, according to Trippier.

He said: “The Madrid derbies..the pressure. Before every single game the president comes down and you don’t see that in England.

“Just how family orientated it is in Spain is incredible. Just how they treated me, my wife and children, I’ve full respect for anyone associated with Atletico as they made me slot just straight in here and it’s been perfect.”

The England ace has been a key part of Diego Simeone’s squad this season and admits, at 29, he wishes he’d made the move sooner.

That’s despite being put through the mill by Simeone and his staff every day.

“I thought Tottenham were brutal with the training sessions but it took it to an all new level,” he said.  I thought I could relax in the sunshine but none of that!

Trippier receives orders from manager Simeone – an intense character

“Unbelievable the manager and the way you see him on the touchline is what he’s like in training. He’s not doing it for the cameras.

“Always before games he’s always walking up and down thinking. He takes everything in training. His demands are so high and if you’re not training well he makes you know.

“I knew I needed to improve on my training, that was shown in my last season at Spurs. There’s no better club, manager to work under.

“Looking back it would have been good to come out here early if the options was there.
