Luis Enrique view on Arsenal job emerges amid Unai Emery Premier League struggles

Luis Enrique isn’t keen on taking the Arsenal job should Unai Emery be sacked, according to reports.

The former Barcelona manager left his post as Spain manager earlier in the year, choosing to walk away from the hotseat at a time where his nine-year-old daughter was dying of bone cancer.

He’s been tipped to return to management with Arsenal amid the struggles of Emery, who is fighting a face to keep his job.

But ESPN claim that Enrique isn’t keen on returning to management just yet.

He’s not willing to consider a return to coaching and prefers to build projects - meaning a midseason arrival is currently unlikely.

For now, Arsenal are willing to give Emery time to turn things around.

But Saturday’s chastening 2-0 Premier League defeat to Leicester means they’re facing a huge task to finish in the top four.

Arsenal are currently nine points adrift of the Champions League qualifying slots.

And there’s a feeling that Emery will lose his job at the end of the campaign if he fails to steer them into Europe’s top-tier club competition.

While Enrique is the favourite for the Arsenal job, Mikel Arteta has also been linked.

The Spaniard was in the frame to take over from Arsene Wenger back in 2018 but the board, ultimately, went for Emery.

Yet former Chelsea star Tony Cascarino believes Arteta would be a wise appointment, saying recently: “There are managers out there, but I said three years ago Mikel Arteta would have been the one [I picked].

“If you read about all the stuff about Arteta at Man City behind the scenes, I felt he would be a great fit for Arsenal and I think he would take it to a new direction.

“His English is far better than Emery’s and he would be a massive plus for Arsenal if they chose to make that decision.

“Arsenal have to be brought together. There are a very divided club from their fanbase.

“Their fanbase is totally divided; they were over Wenger, they are over Emery and they are over the players in their team. It’s where the club is.

“Some has got to convince Arsenal fans who are doubters that they’re on the right track. Unai Emery hasn’t done that.

“He hasn’t convinced Arsenal fans who don’t believe he is the right man.”
