Mourinho was sacked in December, and since then, club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken over and led them to five wins on the spin.

They do, however, face their first big test on Sunday, when they take on Mauricio Pochettino’s  Tottenham at Wembley.

But with previous games against Cardiff, Bournemouth, Huddersfield, Newcastle and Reading all ending in victory of Solskjaer’s men, Smith has cited the freshness he believes the Norwegian has brought back to Old Trafford.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revitalised the club. He’s made it look easy,” he told the Evening Standard.

“More generally, everyone’s smiling again, having previously almost forgotten that football is supposed to be enjoyable.

“I know what it’s like when a fresh face comes in to sweep away the debris left by an overbearing manager who had lost his way.

“The atmosphere instantly changes. The sun starts to peek out as confidence returns.”

The Red Devils are now just six points off the top four spots in the Premier League, and their new attacking style may help them close the gap.

Smith also spoke about the impact that Solskjaer has had on his new players, who under Mourinho, weren’t performing.

“All of a sudden, Marcus Rashford is flying, as is Paul Pogba  in that roving role,” he added.

Rashford has been back on the scoring front since Mourinho left, notching three in four games.

Solskjaer also spoke about his young forward ahead of the game with Spurs on Sunday, comparing him to one of the world’s best.

"We can talk about Harry Kane and his class. Marcus has the potential to get up there also," the 45-year-old said.

"He is very exciting to work with and can become a top, top striker.

“He's got frightening pace. He's become stronger and can hold the ball up for us.”
