Arsene Wenger’s hopes of closing out his 22-year association with Arsenal with a flourish crashed to what many predicted would be a damp squib of an ending.

There is no silver-lining for the Frenchman, no swansong, no glory and no final trophy following a 2-1 aggregate loss to Atletico Madrid in tonight’s Europa League Semi-Final second-leg.

Arsene and Arsenal’s shot at the Final and potential Champions League involvement came to an end when we blew the opportunity of the first-leg.

Having had such a perceived advantage but failing to take it, the second affair was always going to be more difficult and unfortunately, former Chelsea player, Diego Costa’s, first-half stoppage-time effort was enough to separate the sides at the full-time whistle.

We did have chances in the game and opportunities in the second period but ultimately we miss out on Champions League football for a second successive season and the European box for Wenger remains empty during his time at the club.

Not the way Wenger supporters wanted this to end, and no doubt not the way the Anti-Wenger fans would’ve hoped for either but sadly it is what it is.

An Achilles injury for Laurent Koscielny just makes a bad night even worse.
