Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has reportedly made personal contact with Ivan Rakitic as he aims to convince the Barcelona star to move to the Emirates.

Rakitic, 32, is linked with a move away from Camp Nou this summer after a glittering six-year spell in Catalonia.

The midfielder played a vital role as Barcelona won the treble in his first season with the club and he has since won a further three La Liga and Copa del Rey titles.

But Rakitic has fallen down the pecking order in the last season and has made just 20 starts across all competitions.

As he enters the final year of his deal, Barcelona are willing to let Rakitic leave for just €10million (£9million) and Arteta has been in touch to persuade the Croatian to move to north London.

That's according to Le10 Sport , who report the Gunners boss outlined how he would utilise Rakitic during the phone call.

Arteta is believed to be keen on strengthening his midfield options, which were weakened as Dani Ceballos' loan expired after the FA Cup final and the Spaniard returned to Real Madrid.

Once considered one of Europe's top midfielders, Rakitic has scored 35 goals and provided 41 assists in 309 Barcelona appearances.

But he is believed to be unmoved by the prospect of playing in the Premier League and would rather remain in Spain or switch to Serie A.

In June, Rakitic insisted he had a "great" relationship with the Barcelona hierarchy but admitted he wanted "clarity" over his future.

“I'm not angry with anyone, I still have a great relationship with everyone at the club and I'm incredibly grateful for the time so far at Barca," the Croatia vice-captain told Sport1.

“It's just that after the long time I've been here, people talk to me openly about everything.

“I want clarity in which direction it is going. I now feel that we want to take a common path.

“I have no problem with the fact that there have been many headlines around my name in recent years.

“I am always open to discussions with those responsible and prefer it to being told about it through third parties.

“I am still very happy at Barca. My wife also feels very comfortable in Barcelona.”
