Paul Pogba is officially the highest-paid pounds-per-minute footballer in the Premier League.

The Manchester United midfielder earned a staggering £28,735 for every 60 seconds he wore the famous Red shirt over the past injury-ravaged 12 months.

That makes him the No 1 earner in the world's richest league when it comes to measuring wages against actual minutes on the pitch.

A study by OLBG, using financial data from Forbes' 2020 list of the highest-paid athletes in the world, claims Pogba earned a basic wage of $23million (£17.53m) in the 12 months up to June 1.

Having spent just 610 minutes on the pitch, that works out at $37,705 (£28,699) every 60 seconds.

That means it took Pogba less than half-an-hour of action to bank a cool one million dollars.

Yet while the 27-year-old Frenchman set the pace in the Premier League, he only ranked 12th in a list that was limited to the big-earning superstars of football, basketball, baseball, boxing, MMA and American Football.

The top five places are all occupied by fighters – with Ireland's former UFC champion Conor McGregor leading the way thanks to his stunning 40-second demolition of Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone in Las Vegas in January.

It was McGregor's only fight in the 12-month period and it earned him $32million – or an incredible £609,000 for every single SECOND he spent in the cage.

Boxers Deontay Wilder and Canelo Alvazez take up the next two places in the table – just ahead of British pair Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

Fury, the reigning WBC and The Ring heavyweight champion who defeated Wilder in February, earned $50million (£38.06m) from his 57 minutes in the ring – which works out at £667,671 every minute.

And WBO, IBF, WBO and IBF champion Joshua banked $36million (£27.4million) for his 57 minutes of action – which calculates at £480,723-per-minute.

Those mind-blowing figures may raise the question as to why government ministers have been questioning footballer's salaries during the coronavirus pandemic.

Pogba is topped only by Old Trafford team-mate Alexis Sanchez when it comes to football.

The Chilean, currently on-loan at Inter Milan, earned a basic salary of $24.6million (£18.72million) – which works out at £360,0000-a-week.

Sanchez spent just under 10 hours on the pitch, which means he earned £31,416 for every minute he kicked a ball in anger.

Neymar, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo also take up places in the top 40 ranks.

But the next Premier League star to feature in the charts is Arsenal misfit Mezut Ozil.

The German midfielder, who has not featured for the Gunners since the season resumed, earned $23.2million (£17.66m) in the 12 months up to June 1.

That means he took home £9745 for every one of the 1,812 minutes he played the game.

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea ranked 73rd, taking home £5468-per-minute.
