Alex Iwobi joined Everton for an initial fee of £28m, which could rise to £34m with potential add-ons, while Nacho Monreal and Laurent Koscielny joined Real Sociedad and Bordeaux respectively.

Unai Emery believes Arsenal's outgoings this summer can have a positive effect on the club's young players and also the new signings who have arrived.

We've lost some important players, for example Nacho Monreal and [Laurent] Koscielny, and in the last moment [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan and [Alex] Iwobi.

Furthermore, Pepe joined up the Ivory Coast squad and spent a short period with the team but both parties agreed best for him to sit out games against Benin and Tunisia.

"We are getting young players and giving them chances to do one step more with us, getting that performance in the way we demand.

Whilst the loss of experienced campaigners like Monreal and Koscielny weakens the Gunners' defensive options on paper, Emery says their exits can galvanise the squad and provide younger players with much needed opportunities.

"I think with the young players and also the experienced players we have, plus we've signed some new players, I think we are building a very important squad with different characteristics from the players.
